Rock & Roll Band

A song about a bar band's rise, written before the band had played live.
Boston, from Boston (1976)

Written by
Tom Scholz
Released

Length
2:59
Album
Boston

Scholz began writing it in the early 1970s, with help from Delp, and finished the demo in 1974. Paul Ahern played the song to Charlie McKenzie to interest him in the band. It is the only song on the album with Jim Masdea on drums, and Scholz plays clavinet and all the guitars, including bass. Scholz has called the story in the lyric pure fantasy, since the band had not played live or toured at the time. It was inspired by Masdea's stories of playing in bands in Hyannis, Massachusetts and dreaming of being discovered.

Boston opened its concerts with it, and on the 1987 and 1988 Third Stage tour Masdea came back to play drums on this one song. The New Duncan Imperials covered it on their 1993 EP We're in a Band. ClassicRockHistory.com ranked it sixth among Boston songs.
