"Breadfan", credited to Shelley, Bourge and Phillips, opens the 1973 album, recorded at Rockfield in February and March 1973. The title plays on bread as money, and the lyrics are about keeping, giving away or spending money and being free of its control. A search summary of Louder has Shelley saying it is simply about someone who loves money and that he coined the title, but the article itself would not load. The original pressing opened with a 17-second excerpt of a Winston Churchill speech of November 10, 1942, removed from later pressings over copyright.

A band-made promo video on 18-millimetre videotape was shown on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1973 as filler, was thought lost, was found without sound and was restored by a BBC Wales technician, released with the 2004 remaster; Wikipedia gives 8.6 million YouTube views. Setlist.fm shows it as Budgie's most-played song with 182 performances. The song has been used in the video game Brutal Legend and is played at Principality Stadium in Cardiff at Welsh rugby matches.

Metallica recorded it in September 1988 as a B-side to "Harvester of Sorrow", by Wikipedia, though Ultimate Classic Rock says "Eye of the Beholder"; it is on Garage Inc. (1998) and was an encore on the 1988-89 tour. Others who covered it include Ningen Isu (as "Hari no Yama", 1990), Sweet Savage at Wacken in 2008, Florence Black and Alunah. Which version our upload is is not known.
