The opening track of Man in the Hills runs 4:00 and was written by Rodney. It evokes the superiority of rural living over urban living. In Jamaican history the roots of radical protest and a national identity grew from communities formed in the hills by escaped slaves and, after emancipation in 1838, the so-called Free Villages. The album it opens is pastoral and dreamlike, with songs that recall Rodney's childhood in Saint Ann's Bay.
