A Different Kind of Tension

The third album, with sleeve triangles to follow squares and circles.
Buzzcocks, 1979

Released
September 1979
Studio
Eden Studios
Label
United Artists
Producer
Martin Rushent

Produced by Rushent and recorded at Eden Studios, mixed at Genetic Sound and mastered by George Peckham at Portland Recording Studio. It came out in September 1979, reached number 26 in the UK and number 163 in the US. Its sleeve, a photograph of the band by Jill Furmanovsky among a montage of triangles, continued Malcolm Garrett's pattern of squares on the debut and circles on Love Bites. Shelley played keyboards as well as guitar.

Reviewing it in 1980, Rolling Stone's Mikal Gilmore felt it was repetitive but called it the band's most formidable record yet, and singled out I Believe as Shelley's strongest statement.
