Recorded
July and August 1978
Label
United Artists
Producer
Martin Rushent

Recorded and mixed with Rushent over two and a half weeks in July and August 1978, less than six months after the debut and during an extensive touring schedule. It reached number 13 in the UK and remains their highest-charting album. It holds the hit single Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've). Late for the Train was first played and recorded on John Peel's Radio One show, along with Garvey's instrumental Walking Distance. Just Lust carries a co-writing credit for Alan Dial, a pen-name of the manager Richard Boon. The script on the sleeve refers to paintings by René Magritte.

Trouser Press said it showed both the perfection of their brand of pop and their disillusionment with its limits. A BBC Music review called it an essential purchase for anyone remotely interested in punk's history. In March 1994 EMI released a CD with four extra tracks: Love You More, Noise Annoys, Promises and Lipstick.
