El Mirador was recorded in the summer of 2021 at Sergio Mendoza's home studio, with Burns and Convertino having moved to Boise and El Paso. Tucker Martine mixed all but Cumbia del Polvo, which Camilo Lara mixed, and JJ Golden mastered it. Sam Beam sings backing vocals on Harness the Wind, and Gaby Moreno on El Mirador, Cumbia del Polvo and Constellation. Pieta Brown co-wrote Then You Might See and El Paso, and Jairo Zavala co-wrote Cumbia Peninsula.

PopMatters heard cumbia, conjunto and mariachi influences and a celebration of community, with The El Burro Song a tongue-in-cheek nod to the southwestern party scene, Liberada a sing-along call to an uncle's 80th birthday party, and El Paso a slink and a whisper about border issues.
