Years to Burn is the second release by Calexico and Iron & Wine after the In the Reins EP of 2005. It was produced by Burns, Convertino, Matt Ross-Spang and Sam Beam, engineered by Ross-Spang and Rachel Moore, and mastered by Richard Dodd. Beam sings and plays acoustic guitar, Burns plays guitars, Convertino plays drums and vibes, Paul Niehaus plays pedal steel, Rob Burger plays piano, accordion and organ, Sebastian Steinberg plays bass and Jacob Valenzuela plays trumpet.
PopMatters wrote that Beam did write the bulk of the album, while Burns's Midnight Sun added an oneiric mythology. It said The Bitter Suite merges three pieces, including Pajaro and Beam's Tennessee Train, and counted Valenzuela as one of the stars of the record. The two acts played Father Mountain, Midnight Sun and He Lays in the Reins at an NPR Tiny Desk concert on 1 August 2019.
