Latimer and Ward were joined by the bassist Colin Bass, who replaced Richard Sinclair, and by the keyboard players Jan Schelhaas and Kit Watkins, formerly of Happy the Man, who both replaced Bardens. Work began in the summer of 1979 with the producer Rupert Hine at Farmyard Studios in Little Chalfont, and in a residential studio in an Elizabethan country house. Orchestral overdubs were added at AIR Studios in London. Latimer said Hine was great fun to work with and that they made the record quickly. At one point it was to be called Endangered Species.
Mel Collins played saxophone, Phil Collins played percussion and Simon Jeffes arranged the orchestra on Who We Are and Survival. The album spent three weeks on the British chart and reached 45. A planned single was shelved. A maxi single followed with an edited Remote Romance, Rainbow's End and Tell Me, and did not chart. Your Love Is Stranger Than Mine and Neon Magic came out as a single in February 1980. The sleeve is based on a joke in which Jesus on the cross calls Peter to him, and pays homage to Dali's Christ of Saint John of the Cross. The world tour began on 8 October at The Dome in Brighton.
