Young Hearts Run Free
Her 1976 single, written and produced by Dave Crawford, which reached number two in the UK and number one on the US soul chart.
Candi Staton, from Young Hearts Run Free (1976)
Crawford wrote and produced it for Warner Bros., with "I Know" on the B-side; the album version is 4:08 and the single 3:51. Recording dates, studio and personnel were not found. The Encyclopedia of Alabama says it was recorded in a single take, and Crawford told Grammy.com that her studio take was not practice but real. Staton has said it began at a lunch with Crawford in Los Angeles where she described a bad relationship while he kept writing down what she said, that he promised to write a song that would last forever, and that she was singing her own story. She quoted its message on Radio 2 as I refuse to be abused, and she answered it with her 1978 single "Victim".
In 1976 it reached number one on the US soul chart for a week, number 20 on the Hot 100, number two in the UK (kept from number one by The Real Thing's "You to Me Are Everything") and number four in Australia. It is certified platinum in the UK and gold in the US. A 1986 remix reached the UK top 50, and her 1999 re-recording on React reached number 29. NME placed it among the 20 best disco songs in 2019, and Rolling Stone ranked it 150th of 200 greatest dance songs in 2022.
Kym Mazelle covered it for the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack in 1996 (UK number 20) and Gloria Estefan in 2005. Setlist.fm shows it 14 times, though that count is unconfirmed, including Glastonbury on June 25, 2023. Which version our upload is is not known.
