Richard Sinclair played bass, acoustic guitar and sang, Hastings guitars and vocals, Dave Sinclair Hammond organ, piano and Mellotron, and Coughlan drums, with Jimmy Hastings on flute, tenor saxophone and piccolo and John Beecham on trombone on "Golf Girl". The engineers were Dave Grinsted, John Punter and Derek Varnals. The title was suggested by Richard Sinclair from a Kent sunset seen during rehearsals at Graveney, and the cover painting is by Anne Marie Anderson. The title track was the last to be recorded and has Richard Sinclair blowing bubbles. Only "Nine Feet Underground" was recorded outside the AIR sessions. "Aristocracy" was shelved and re-recorded for Waterloo Lily.

Louder's Prog writer Paul Henderson called it a genuine masterpiece that pitifully few people heard about on its arrival, and the band said they spent so much on studio time there was little left for promotion. Pye Hastings said in 2021 that the production, songwriting and playing had all peaked, and Dave Sinclair said they had reached a zenith in a way. Record Collector's Marco Rossi advised newcomers to start here.
