What a Beautiful Place
Her 1971 debut: jazzy, orchestral ballads produced by Bobby Scott, rediscovered in 2007.
Catherine Howe, 1971
What a Beautiful Place was recorded in February 1971 at Trident, with Bobby Scott producing. Numero describes it as jazzy, orchestral balladry somewhere between Bryter Layter and Ask Me No Questions, and as a folk-tinged autobiography of Howe at twenty, moving from Yorkshire to mid-century London and then Dorset; Numero's blurb counts twelve songs, though another summary of its page says eleven. The reissue has catalog number NUM012. Noah Berlatsky wrote in Bitch Magazine (reprinted December 13, 2008) that her voice recalls Karen Carpenter's, that the music is basically folk-pop and that the orchestration is a little cloying on prolonged exposure. A Boomkat reviewer called it her finest work, and a Michigan Daily review in March 2007 praised the title track and "On a Misty Morning".
