Fuck You was released in August 2010 as the lead single of The Lady Killer. CeeLo Green wrote it with Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine and Brody Brown, and the Smeezingtons (Mars, Lawrence and Levine) produced it. Levine engineered, Manny Marroquin mixed it at Larrabee Sound Studios in Hollywood, and Chris Gehringer mastered it at Sterling Sound in New York.

Green told NME that the song was about heartbreak and also about the music industry. Mars recalled that when a girl leaves you for a guy with more money, what you really want to say is fuck you, and that if anyone was going to say it, it would be Cee-Lo. The unedited recording was followed by two clean versions, Forget You, used on UK television in the video and on US radio, and FU for UK radio. A lyric video appeared on YouTube that month and the official video, directed by Matt Stawski and shot at Cadillac Jack's, a diner set in Sun Valley, Los Angeles, followed on 1 September 2010.

It topped the charts in the United Kingdom and made the top ten in 13 countries. In the United States it first peaked at number nine, then climbed to number two after the Grammy performance and sat there for four weeks behind Lady Gaga's Born This Way, spending 48 weeks on the Hot 100. It was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 53rd Grammy Awards and won Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Time named it the number one song of 2010. Bruno Mars has sung it in a medley during his live shows of 2022 to 2024.
