Mesmerise was a non-album single in 1991. It spent two weeks on the British chart, entering and peaking at 60, and reached 21 on the US alternative chart. The CD and 12 inch carried Precious One, Summer Chill and Then We'll Rise. Because it sampled John Barry and Don Black's This Way Mary, Barry and Black share the writing credit, and the band gave them half the royalties. It later appeared on The Best of Chapterhouse.
Robert Smith of the Cure said in 1993 that he listened to Mesmerise for its feeling of abandon while preparing Wish, and that one night he played it twenty times, turning it up and putting himself into a trance. Nothing in it could be traced in the Cure's own sound, he said, but it carried an indefinable something he wanted to capture. The song was still in the set in 2026, and the audience recording from Birmingham on 27 April has it seventeenth of eighteen.
