Chicago 16 was the first Chicago album on Warner Bros. and the first produced by David Foster, with Humberto Gatica engineering and mixing. Bill Champlin was new to the band; Robert Lamm was largely unavailable and has one partial credit, and Laudir de Oliveira was dismissed after the Chicago XIV tour. The album is credited with the band's comeback. Singles were Hard to Say I'm Sorry at number 1, Love Me Tomorrow at 22 and What You're Missing at 81.
It reached number 9 on the Billboard 200, 11 in Germany and Japan, 17 in Canada, 22 in Australia and 44 in the UK, and is platinum in the US. Billboard said it was filled with the distinctive hooks that made the band the top American band for most of the 1970s, and AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave it three and a half stars, calling it no-nonsense, all-business, crisp and clean pop for the Reagan era.
