Rea's eighth studio album followed Shamrock Diaries. It reached number 11 in Britain and in Sweden, topped the Dutch chart, staying on it for more than nine months, and reached number two in West Germany and number four in New Zealand. A deluxe remastered edition followed in 2019.
Of Giverny, written after a visit to Monet's home, Rea said he did not want to be there and only went because his wife Joan was there. The singles were It's All Gone, On the Beach and a re-recorded Hello Friend, which carried the original version of Driving Home for Christmas as a B-side. AllMusic called it an excellent introduction to his brighter, more optimistic songwriting.
