Production began in February 2020, shortly before the pandemic, and the band then carried on remotely over Zoom, recording between Glasgow and Los Angeles. They produced it themselves. The title came from a discarded name for the band, and the idea of violence on screen, by screens and through screens had been floated as an album concept in 2019. Mayberry said the lyrics are about the things the band experienced that feel like horror. How Not to Drown grew from a piano and drum demo by Doherty. Robert Smith of the Cure sang on it after the band's manager approached him, sending back his vocal after hearing the track, and he also played bass and backwards guitar.
Singles were He Said She Said, How Not to Drown and Good Girls. John Carpenter remixed Good Girls and the band remixed his Turning the Bones. A director's cut edition with three extra songs appeared on 29 October 2021. The album entered at number 4 in Britain and number 31 on the US Billboard 200, and Metacritic averaged 81 from 24 reviews. Kitty Empire of the Guardian called How Not to Drown the band's very best Cure homage. It won Best Song by a UK Artist at the NME Awards in 2022.
