Chvrches began work in January 2015, six weeks after coming off tour, and returned to Alucard Studios in Glasgow, where the first album was made. Cook said they wanted to go back to where it all started, partly out of superstition, and spend the money on better gear instead of handing the record to another studio and producer. They added more synthesizers, wrote around thirty demos and recorded 21 tracks, working six-hour days, five days a week, over about five months. Offers of outside co-writers were refused, with Doherty saying they wanted to be an actual band. Clearest Blue was the seventeenth track recorded and, in Doherty's words, came to define how the rest sounds. For Afterglow, on the final day of recording they slowed the song down, removed the drums and re-recorded the vocal in a single take with background noises left in, and it was chosen to close the album.
Singles were Leave a Trace, Never Ending Circles, Clearest Blue, Empty Threat and a new version of Bury It with Hayley Williams. Mark "Spike" Stent mixed the first ten tracks. The album entered at number 4 in Britain and number 8 in the United States, topping the US rock and alternative albums charts, and Metacritic averaged 77 from 31 reviews. Rebecca Nicholson of the Guardian called it an assured follow-up that turns up the intensity of its predecessor's stadium-pop moments and ends with Chvrches at their prettiest. An extended edition in July 2016 added Warning Call, the theme for the game Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and a 10th anniversary edition with eight bonus tracks came out for Record Store Day in April 2025.
