The song is credited to Lennon and McCartney but was written mainly by McCartney, one of his earliest compositions, believed by the Beatles Bible to date from 1959. McCartney said he wrote it one night on his Zenith acoustic guitar walking home to Allerton, while his former girlfriend Dot Rhone said he wrote it for her. It was part of the Quarrymen's repertoire and played at the Cavern, and was one of 15 songs at the Beatles' Decca audition on January 1, 1962, the only original from that audition never officially issued; McCartney said we performed it at our audition for Decca when they unwisely passed us up. Bill Harry reported that Lennon suggested it for Beryl Marsden at the Blue Angel and Epstein vetoed it.

Cilla's single, Parlophone R 5065, came out on September 27, 1963, 2:02, with Bobby Willis's "Shy of Love" on the B-side, produced by George Martin with McCartney at the session; Cilla Black sings and Don McGinty plays drums. The recording date and studio were not found, so Abbey Road is not claimed. She was disappointed by the jazzy brass sound in the studio, having loved the song from the Cavern. It reached number 35 on the Record Retailer chart and 30 on the NME chart in October 1963, an unusual failure for an Epstein act with a Lennon and McCartney song.

Covers include the Poppees (1975), RollerCoaster (1980), the Beatnix (1998), Apple Jam and the Weeklings (2016, recorded at Abbey Road). Our upload is presumably the 1963 single. No video or setlist counts were found.
