Brown wrote it. The first recording was on July 12, 1954 at Capitol's Melrose studios in Los Angeles, a septet for Pacific Jazz with Brown, Stu Williamson on valve trombone, Zoot Sims on tenor, Bob Gordon on baritone, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass and Shelly Manne on drums, arranged by Jack Montrose. The quintet version, recorded on August 6, 1954 at Capitol Studios with Brown, Harold Land, Richie Powell, George Morrow and Roach, is 4:01 and was issued on EmArcy MG 26043 and MG 36036. An alternate take came out on Mainstream in 1973 on the album Daahoud. The title's origin is unverified.

Brown played it again at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 16, 1955 with Rollins, and live versions from 1956 include one at the Cotton Club in Cleveland (6:53) and Basin Street East in New York on May 6, 1956. Wikipedia lists "Sandu", "Joy Spring" and "Daahoud" as Brown compositions that became jazz standards, and his playing of "Joy Spring" and "Daahoud" is on the soundtrack of Let's Get Lost (1988). Ryan Kisor, Jeremy Pelt, Oscar Peterson and Don Braden have recorded it. Our upload is titled just "Daahoud"; the 4:01 master is the likely match, but that cannot be confirmed. No charts or setlist counts were found.
