Journeys by DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness was the eighth in a mix series launched in 1993 by the London nightclub owner Tim Fielding, whose earlier volumes had profiled house DJs. Coldcut made theirs with Kevin Foakes and Patrick Carpenter, taking as its model their Solid Steel radio show. The subtitle refers to the Seven Minutes of Madness remix of Paid in Full, and the liner notes dedicate the recording to William Burroughs, Double Dee and Steinski, Grandmaster Flash and other cut and paste pioneers.
The mix runs through 35 tracks, from hip hop, electro and funk to techno, jungle and ambient, with spoken word samples laid over the top. It opens with the actor Geoffrey Sumner saying that this is a journey. Some tracks could not be cleared: More said Sony refused to license Coldcut's own People Hold On. Black said the aim was to show what DJ culture is actually about.
It reached number 41 on the UK Compilation Chart. It was deleted in 1998 when the track licenses expired and reissued on 28 May 2002, when it reached number 28. Jockey Slut named it the best compilation album of all time in 1998, and The Guardian's Dorian Lynskey wrote that it remains the standard by which all DJ mix albums are judged.
