Common and John Legend wrote Glory with Rhymefest, and Columbia Records released it on 11 December 2014 as the theme of Selma, in which Common played the civil rights leader James Bevel. The film's article describes it as a protest anthem that refers to the 2014 Ferguson protests. It debuted at 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at 49, Common's fourth charted song of his own. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards and the Golden Globe at the 72nd, and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 58th Grammys in 2016.
Legend and Common performed it on Good Morning America on 5 January 2015, closed the 57th Grammy Awards with it on 8 February 2015 at the Staples Center, and played it at the Academy Awards on 22 February 2015 on a stage set as the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The video, which Paramount Pictures directed, begins with Legend at the piano and Common rapping elsewhere and includes footage from the film. In October 2016 Common performed it with Yolanda Adams on the South Lawn of the White House.
