Like Water for Chocolate

The first single from Like Water for Chocolate was produced by DJ Premier, which made it the only song on the album not produced by a member of the Soulquarians. Common said it was the last song he recorded for the album, and that he had wanted to work with Premier because Gang Starr was among his favorite groups. The chorus is built from Premier's scratched samples of The Intruders' Memories Are Here to Stay and Mobb Deep's Allustrious, with Bilal singing. It opens with Common saying that the revolution will not be televised, the revolution is here. Andrew Dosunmu directed the video, which shows Common rapping in a stationary car beside Bilal while chaos goes on outside.

It reached 87 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and 14 on the Hot Rap Singles chart. Pitchfork's 2000 review said Common got iller than syphilis over a track supplied by Gang Starr's DJ Premier. It was also a B-side of the next single, The Light, and 9th Wonder made a remix that spread widely as a free download.
