Talkin' Like You (Two Tall Mountains)
The opening track of How Sad, How Lovely: a playful voice-and-guitar answer to an absent lover.
Connie Converse, from How Sad, How Lovely (1954)
"Talkin' Like You (Two Tall Mountains)" is the first track on How Sad, How Lovely (2009), 2:30, written by Connie Converse, with Gene Deitch credited on tape. Fluxblog put it in the middle of the 1950s in a 2010 post; the album's own date is 1954. It was the first Converse song Howard Fishman ever heard, at a holiday party in 2010. Jeremy Lybarger wrote in The New Republic in 2023 that it is perhaps the closest thing to an earworm Converse ever produced, about two and a half minutes with a playful narrator answering an absent lover, intricate rhymes and winding melodies.
MusicBrainz holds two separate recordings with this title: one of 2:30, first released on the 2009 album, and one of 2:34 on the 2023 Musicks tapes. The shorter 2009 take also appeared on Buried Treasures, a 2023 promotional compilation. Which one our upload is cannot be told from its title. No statement from Converse about the song, and no covers or samples, were found.
