The album's direction was shaped by the music the band heard while touring the southern United States after their debut, and 200 More Miles was written in reference to their life on the road. Michael Timmins has described sleeping on the floors of promoters while touring behind the debut.
When the band remade the album in the church in 2006, Ryan Adams took the lead vocal. Pitchfork's Stephen M. Deusner said he turned the song into a rolling trucker's anthem. The title was borrowed for a double live CD, 200 More Miles, released in October 1995 to complete the band's contract with RCA before it signed with Geffen.
