The shows came from the Fillmore East on 2 to 7 June 1970, the Forum in Los Angeles on 26 to 28 June and the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 5 July. The first pressing came in a gatefold sleeve with no track listing, which appeared only on the record labels and a fold-out poster with the lyrics. Sides one and two are acoustic and show the four as individuals, with Crosby and Nash playing as a pair on The Lee Shore and Right Between the Eyes. Sides three and four have the full band on electric guitars, among them Ohio and Find the Cost of Freedom, the two sides of their new single.
Many of the songs had not yet been released: Love the One You're With later appeared on Stills's debut solo album and Chicago on Nash's Songs for Beginners. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 and went gold. George Edward Kimball in Rolling Stone called it their best album to date. Nash produced an expanded CD on 15 June 1992 that added four solo acoustic performances, one by each member.
