Atlantic released Déjà Vu under catalogue number SD 7200 and had taken $2 million in pre-orders by January 1970. It was certified Gold 14 days after release. Bill Halverson engineered, all four members produced, and the drummer Dallas Taylor and bassist Greg Reeves are credited on the cover in slightly smaller type. Only Woodstock, Almost Cut My Hair and Helpless were played by the band as a unit, as Neil Young put it in 1975. Most of the rest were built by one writer with the others added. Young is on about half of the tracks. His Country Girl joins three pieces: Whiskey Boot Hill, Down, Down, Down, and Country Girl (I Think You're Pretty). Jerry Garcia plays pedal steel on Teach Your Children and John Sebastian harmonica on the title track.
Crosby said the title track came from his belief that people go round again, a wheel the Buddhists had right. Stills said the title track alone took about 100 takes, while Carry On took eight hours from conception to finished master. The album topped the Billboard 200 for a week, was certified 7x platinum and has sold over eight million copies in the United States. Robert Christgau counted five or seven memorable tunes and credited Young's guitar for making the music work. In Rolling Stone, Langdon Winner wrote that the sound was still too sweet and too perfect. Rolling Stone placed it at number 148 in 2003 and 220 in 2020, and it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2023. A 50th anniversary edition on 14 May 2021 added 38 previously unissued songs.
