Stills dominated the recording. Crosby and Nash played guitar on their own songs and Dallas Taylor drummed on most tracks, with Jim Gordon taking over on Marrakesh Express. Stills played all the bass, organ and lead guitar parts, as well as acoustic guitar on his own songs. He is not on Guinnevere or Lady of the Island, which feature only Crosby and Nash. Wooden Ships was written by Crosby and Stills with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane, who was credited on the 2006 expanded edition.
The cover shows Nash, Stills and Crosby on a battered sofa outside an abandoned house at 815 Palm Avenue in West Hollywood, photographed by Henry Diltz before the group had a name. The order was the inverse of the name, so they went back to reshoot, and found the house had been demolished. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard chart, with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes reaching 21 and Marrakesh Express 28, and it is certified four times platinum. In Rolling Stone, Barry Franklin called it an eminently playable record. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
