Black Sunday

The second album, a number one debut with Insane in the Brain, and a darker record than its predecessor.
Cypress Hill, 1993

Released
20 July 1993
Label
Ruffhouse, Columbia
Producer
DJ Muggs

Released on 20 July 1993 by Ruffhouse and Columbia, it entered the US Billboard 200 at number one, selling 261,000 copies in its first week, the highest Soundscan figure for a hip-hop group at that point. With the debut still in the charts, Cypress Hill became the first hip-hop group to have two albums in the top 10 at the same time. Muggs recorded it in his New York apartment, where he said every beat and rhyme was done in six weeks. He had bought a second SP-1200. The programming was then taken to Nicolo's Studio 4 in Philadelphia, where the tracks were printed to two-inch tape, rap vocals went through a Neumann U87 that the engineer nicknamed Black Elvis, and like most tracks it was mixed in a day.

T-Ray produced I Ain't Goin' Out Like That, the only track not produced by Muggs. A clean version of the album drops A to the K, and Hand on the Glock is a re-recording of Hand on the Pump. Rolling Stone and The Source each gave it four stars, and The Source called it a darker sequel. The album placed eighth in NME's top 50 LPs of 1993 and 29th in the Village Voice's Pazz and Jop poll. Albumism later wrote that it still felt darker and less accessible than the debut, praised Muggs's deep, almost hollow-sounding basslines, and called it a rock-solid follow-up. An expanded edition with five extra songs appeared on 20 July 2023.
