Antilles New Directions issued the album on LP and CD in 1988. The LP held 22 songs and the CD 26, all composed by Hanns Eisler and sung by Krause in English, with texts by Bertolt Brecht except where stated. A German-language companion, Panzerschlacht: Die Lieder von Hanns Eisler, came out at the same time. Hannibal had financed Supply and Demand two years earlier, and this album followed on Antilles.
Greg Cohen, the American jazz bassist, is credited as producer. Among the players are Lindsay Cooper and John Leonard on bassoon, John Tilbury on keyboards, John Harle on saxophone, Danny Thompson and Steve Berry on double bass, and Alexander Bălănescu on viola.
John Dougan of AllMusic called it a worthy follow-up to Supply and Demand, with stunning vocals and impeccable backing. Philip Clark of The Wire described it as a laudable attempt at a modern interpretation of the Eisler and Brecht songs, and said Cohen's sensitive arrangements winningly evoked 1920s Berlin. It is included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Voiceprint reissued it in 1994 with all the original tracks and ten bonus tracks taken from the German edition.
