Déjà Vu was recorded between July 1969 and January 1970 at Wally Heider's studios in San Francisco and Hollywood, and produced by all four members. Stills estimated that it took about 800 hours of studio time. Apart from Woodstock, Almost Cut My Hair and Helpless, the songs were recorded as individual sessions by each member. Young appears on only half of the tracks. Nash said the mood was different from the first album. Jerry Garcia plays pedal steel on Teach Your Children and John Sebastian plays harmonica on the title track.
Atlantic had taken $2 million in preorders by January 1970. The album, released on March 11, 1970, topped the Billboard 200 for one week and produced three US Top 40 singles: Woodstock, Teach Your Children and Our House. Reaction at the time was mixed. Rolling Stone's Langdon Winner wrote that the sound was still too sweet and too perfect. Rolling Stone ranked it number 148 in 2003, and the Library of Congress selected it for the National Recording Registry in 2023.
