Frankenchrist is the progressive and psychedelic side of the band. Horns and a spaghetti Western influence show in East Bay Ray's guitar work, and most tracks are slower and longer than on earlier records. John Leib plays trumpet on M.T.V. Get Off the Air, a pointed attack on the music establishment, and Tim Jones plays keyboards on A Growing Boy Needs His Lunch. Stars and Stripes of Corruption sets out Biafra's political views. The cover is a photograph of a Shriners parade, and four of the Shriners pictured sued the band in 1986.

The album came with a poster of H. R. Giger's Landscape XX, which Biafra had seen in a copy of Omni magazine. The band at first rejected the idea of using it as a cover or gatefold, and it was accepted as an insert with a warning sticker on the shrink-wrap. The poster led to the harmful-matter prosecution of Biafra. The trial did not end in a conviction. Trouser Press said the album held two of the band's finest moments, M.T.V. Get Off the Air and Stars and Stripes of Corruption.
