Del and the Boys
Their 2001 album on Ricky Skaggs's Ceili Music label, opening with "1952 Vincent Black Lightning".
Del McCoury Band, 2001
Del and the Boys came out on July 11, 2001 on Ceili Music and peaked at number 50 on Billboard's country chart. The band was Del on guitar and lead vocals, Ronnie on mandolin, Rob on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle and Mike Bub on bass; Vintage Guitar called it their fifth album. The producer, studio and dates were not found. Other songs named in reviews are "All Aboard", "The King's Shilling", "Gone But Not Forgotten", "Count Me Out" (by Jeannie Pruett, with three-part harmony), the Del originals "A Good Man Like Me" and "Unequal Love", "Learning the Blues" with hot-swing fiddle, Ronnie's instrumental "Goldbrickin'", "Travelin' Teardrop Blues" and "The Bluegrass Country", with Ricky Skaggs on harmony.
PopMatters' Andrew Gilstrap called the opener a showstopper that benefits from an understated mix of banjo, mandolin and fiddle; Vintage Guitar's Steven Stone called the record an instant classic and must-have for any bluegrass fan; and Ink19's Sean Slone wrote that it's time for these guys to take over the world. Bluegrass Today said it would remain a classic album even if the opener were the only track. A remastered 25th anniversary edition was scheduled for July 10, 2026 on McCoury Music, with three unreleased tracks and a Lee Ann Womack duet, "Long Enough", written by Mike Evans; Del says it was perhaps the first record to capture the band's live energy.
