Recorded at the Fillmore East during the 1970 United States tour, the double album came out in January 1973. Allman does not appear on it, so the four-piece plays alone. Nine tracks appear, six of which were reissued in 1994 on Live at the Fillmore. Eddie Kramer was engineer.
It reached number 20 on the Billboard Top LPs chart on 27 January 1973 and number 36 in Britain on 24 March. Robert Christgau gave it an A minus and wrote that the absence of Allman was a blessing, because the band could roll easily as the Eric Clapton Band instead of trying to match the studio interplay. The 2011 Layla anniversary edition included a remastered version with bonus tracks, among them "Key to the Highway", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", "Little Wing" and "Crossroads".
