Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul

Irish songs and country soul, an idea Rowland had first held in the mid-1980s.
Dexys Midnight Runners, 2016

Released
3 June 2016
Label
100%, Warner

It was released on 3 June 2016 on 100% and Warner, and it entered the UK chart at number ten on 10 June. Rowland said the idea dated from 1984 or 1985, when the album was to be called Irish and was to include Carrickfergus, Curragh of Kildare and Women of Ireland. When the band broke up it did not happen. He said the title meant Dexys do these songs, not become Irish, and that the band were bringing their own style to them.

The programme grew beyond Irish songs to take in You Wear It Well, which Rowland tied to a summer working at Butlins, and Both Sides Now, which he first heard at 13. Helen O'Hara returned as a guest violinist, her first recording with the band in about 30 years, and Sean Read co-produced. Videos were made for Both Sides Now, Carrickfergus, Curragh of Kildare and Grazing in the Grass.

Dave Simpson of The Guardian said Rowland was inhabiting the songs rather than covering them and called Carrickfergus one of the performances of his career. Tim Sommer, writing in the Observer, called it the most surprising album of 2016. Rowland said he coughed during the Carrickfergus take and a trusted friend told him to keep the cough and the sigh at the end.
