It was the fourth Dexys studio album and the first in 27 years. Rowland explained the gap on BBC 6 Music by saying he wanted material he felt confident about, and that his high standards were a blessing and a curse. The first two minutes of the opening track went onto YouTube on 8 February 2012, and Nowhere Is Home was played on the radio for the first time on 9 March and offered as a free download. The single She Got a Wiggle came out on 28 May 2012, with videos for it and for Incapable of Love.
All but one song was co-written by Rowland and Mick Talbot, often with others such as Jim Paterson or Glen Matlock. Madeleine Hyland sings duets with Rowland, and Lucy Morgan booked the strings, brass and harp players for Ben Trigg's arrangements. Rowland, Talbot and Pete Schwier produced and mixed it, and it was mastered at Real World Studios in Wiltshire. The live shows around the release played the album in full and then older material.
Writing in Pitchfork, Tom Ewing called it a concept album with an unreliable narrator that picks up where Don't Stand Me Down left off, and named She Got a Wiggle and I'm Thinking of You as high points. The turning point he singled out comes in I'm Always Going to Love You, where the disco stops and Rowland admits a mistake to Hyland. Ewing called it an idiosyncratic, brave record.
