The Feminine Divine

Released on 28 July 2023 on 100% Records, it is the sixth Dexys studio album and the first of original songs since 2012. It was written by Rowland, Sean Read, Mike Timothy and Jim Paterson and produced by Pete Schwier and Toby Chapman. It is a concept album about Rowland's progress over three decades from sexism to championing women. The cover drawing was inspired by Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.

After Let the Record Show, Rowland had no ideas for new music for at least three years. In 2021 he began writing demos for songs composed with Read, Timothy and Paterson. The 2022 recording sessions were held at Read's Famous Times studio in Hackney, Chapman's studio in Catford and Timothy's in Willesden. Tensions between Rowland and Chapman threatened the sessions, and Schwier was brought in to finish the album. Rowland told The Guardian that a trip to Thailand and learning about Tao taught him to see women as goddesses.

The lead single I'm Going to Get Free came out on 3 April 2023, with a video directed by Guy Myhill that shows Rowland dancing along Bethnal Green Road. Rowland and Paterson had written the song in the early 1990s. It's Alright Kevin (Manhood 2023) reworks Manhood, which Rowland performed on television in 1993 and recorded for the 2003 compilation. The album entered the UK chart at number six.

It earned a Metacritic score of 77 from four reviews. Alexis Petridis of The Guardian gave it four stars and called it discomfiting, brave, baffling and hugely impressive. Several reviewers singled out My Submission, and Record Collector's Shaun Curran called it the most beautiful thing Dexys have ever done.
