Rowland wrote the lyrics and Archer the music. It is a tribute to the soul singer Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band. It was recorded in 1979 with Pete Wingfield producing and released by EMI in March 1980, with Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache on the B-side. It reached number one in the UK from 3 May 1980 and stayed there for two weeks. It is said to have inspired the Specials' Ghost Town. The Geno, Geno chant at the start is the band, multi-tracked. Wingfield mixed it twice, and the second mix, with the brass louder, was the one used. Rowland said he first saw Geno Washington at the Railway Hotel in Harrow in 1968. Pitchfork's Tom Ewing called it a loping gang-chant.
