Van Morrison recorded the original on 29 January 1972 at Pacific High Studios in San Francisco, producing it with Ted Templeman, and released it in July 1972 on Saint Dominic's Preview. It reached number 61 on the US Hot 100. Dexys released their version on Mercury in August 1982, produced by Rowland, Langer and Winstanley. It reached number five in the UK, number seven in Ireland and number three in Israel.
On Top of the Pops the band performed in front of a backdrop of the darts player Jocky Wilson rather than Jackie Wilson. Rowland said it was a rehearsal nickname and a private joke. The band also sang the song on the UK comedy The Young Ones.
