Freak Scene opens Bug. Mascis wrote and produced it, and it was recorded at Fort Apache by the engineers Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade. It was released as a single on SST in the United States and was Dinosaur Jr.'s first release on Blast First in Britain, backed with Keep the Glove. The single reached number seven on the UK Indie Chart and stayed on it for twelve weeks, and the band made a video for it.
Jess Harvell of Pitchfork called it probably indie rock's greatest guitar performance and the band's greatest pop song. Everett True wrote that it invented the slacker generation. The song has been ranked first in an All Time Indie Top 50. Blink-182 covered it on their demo Flyswatter, and Belle & Sebastian have played it live.
