The fifteen songs were recorded at Columbia in sessions that began in spring 1965 and intensified in September and October, with a group called the Wanderers. They were drummer Carlo Mastrangelo, lead guitarist John Falbo and a bassist, and Al Kooper was a de facto member. The sessions took place in Columbia's Studio A, where Dylan had recorded, and Tom Wilson produced. There are ten originals, two of them written with Mastrangelo, and covers of songs by Mort Shuman and Tom Paxton and three by Dylan: Baby, I'm in the Mood for You, Farewell and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Columbia put out a few songs, including the title track, as singles but not the album.

Dion quit Columbia when it refused to release the record. When he heard a mastered copy of the album in 2017, he told Billboard, the bad feelings lifted and he thought it was the real deal. Norton Records released it in May 2017, with liner notes by Scott Kempner. The Guardian called it dazzling, and AllMusic named it a favorite reissue of 2017. Dion revived the title song on Blues with Friends.
