Made in 1988 and released the following year on Arista, the album marked Dion's return to secular music after much of the 1980s spent on Christian records. Dave Edmunds produced it, and Bryan Adams cowrote and produced Drive All Night. Dion cowrote many of the songs with the lyricist Bill Tuohy. Lou Reed, who inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that year, sings backing vocals alongside Paul Simon, k.d. lang, Adams and Patty Smyth.

The album peaked at 130 on the Billboard 200. King of the New York Streets reached 74 in the UK in May 1989, And the Night Stood Still reached 75 on the Hot 100 and 16 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and Written on the Subway Wall with Little Star, featuring Simon, reached 97 in October 1990. David Browne of Rolling Stone said in 1989 that King of the New York Streets worked magnificently, but called the album as a whole merely pleasant.
