Mythical Kings and Iguanas

Her second solo album: ten songs, with Joe Osborn, Larry Knechtel and Ron Tutt among the session players, on the quest for spiritual fulfilment and a loving relationship.
Dory Previn, 1971

Mythical Kings and Iguanas was released on Mediarts in March 1971, with Nik Venet producing; United Artists took over Mediarts and issued later editions. The studio and recording dates are not stated. Wikipedia gives its theme as the quest for spiritual fulfilment and a loving relationship. The players include David Bennett Cohen, Louie Shelton and others on guitar, Joe Osborn on bass, Phil Davis, Larry Knechtel and others on keyboards, Ron Tutt on drums, Paul Humphrey on percussion, Buddy Collette on clarinet, Bud Brisbois on trumpet, Conte Candoli and Herbie Harper on trombone, a string section, and the Abbey Hall Singers and others on backing vocals.

AllMusic gave it three stars. A 2026 appreciation on Talk About Pop Culture places it at least on the same level as Tapestry, Carly Simon and Blue, and notes that it closes with a reprise of a couple of the album's songs including the title track. Americana UK describes the title song as contrasting her love of grand fantasy with never having learned to make her way in the everyday world, with a closing refrain asking for someone to help, and recommends the two-disc set that pairs the album with Reflections in a Mud Puddle as a starting point. Something Else!'s Kasper Nijsen praised "The Lady with the Braid" for its unique blend of biting sarcasm and fearless emotional honesty.
