McCulloch, Sergeant and Pattinson made the album at Doghouse Studios in early 1997. McCulloch and the band's new manager Paul Toogood produced it, though it was credited to the whole band. Adam Peters arranged the strings, which the London Metropolitan Orchestra played on seven tracks at Abbey Road, and Clif Norrell mixed it. Oasis were recording in the next studio, and Liam Gallagher sang backing vocals on Nothing Lasts Forever. McCulloch said they hit it off right away and that after a few beers he ended up singing on the record. Gallagher also insisted on a tambourine.

The cover photograph was shot by Norman Watson in Marrakesh in early May 1997. It echoes the Crocodiles cover, with a Citroen DS in place of the late de Freitas. Watson also directed the videos for Nothing Lasts Forever and I Want to Be There. The band's first concert since reforming was at the Cream nightclub in Liverpool in early May, followed by two sold-out nights at the Mercury Lounge in New York.

The album came out on 14 July 1997, with a limited edition that added a bonus disc, History of the Peel Sessions 1979-1997. It entered the UK chart at 8, their fifth Top 10 album, and stayed seven weeks. Nothing Lasts Forever reached 8, I Want to Be There (When You Come) reached 30 in September and Don't Let It Get You Down reached 50 in November. The album went Gold in 2024. AllMusic's Ned Raggett called it an attractive piece of work, while Entertainment Weekly's Jeremy Helligar said the reunion had the feel of a non-event.
