Released on 7 October 1985 on Korova in the UK and WEA elsewhere, it was the only single from Songs to Learn & Sing and was recorded for the film Pretty in Pink (1986). Laurie Latham produced the title track, the Bunnymen produced the B-sides, and Anton Corbijn directed the video. McCulloch said that when he writes the words tend to come first and the meaning later, and that it is a romantic single, not in a wishy-washy way but in a big powerful way.
It came out on 7 inch, 12 inch and as a shaped picture disc. The 7 inch runs 3:59 with Over Your Shoulder on the B-side. The 12 inch stretches the title track to 5:37 and adds Bedbugs and Ballyhoo. A limited 7 inch came with a second disc of Villiers Terrace and Monkeys from the August 1979 Peel session. AllMusic's Stewart Mason praised the dreamily catchy chorus and the layers of synths and overdubbed vocals, while Spin's John Leland said it comes up empty.
It reached 21 in the UK, 15 in Ireland, 19 in Belgium and 31 in New Zealand. An early version titled Jimmy Brown appeared on the 2003 reissue of the band's 1987 album.
