Rescue came out on 5 May 1980 and was the first release on Korova. It was produced by Ian Broudie and the band and reached 62 in the UK, their first chart single. Smash Hits called it attractive left field pop. It was later placed on Crocodiles, released that July. Rolling Stone called it spookily evocative pop in 1981, and Pitchfork's 2004 review said Sergeant's massive opening riff turns a chorus that should sound like a plea into a rallying cry.
Idlewild covered it as a B-side to These Wooden Ideas in 2000, and Rogue Wave covered it on the 2016 album Cover Me.
