McCulloch wrote the lyrics and the music was by McCulloch, Sergeant and Pattinson. Laurie Latham produced it, with Henry Priestman on piano. The single, backed with Rollercoaster, came out on WEA and Sire in July 1987. It reached 36 in the UK, 24 in Ireland and 43 in New Zealand. It did not chart in the US but was a staple of college radio and MTV's 120 Minutes. Anton Corbijn directed a black and white video.

In 1992 McCulloch said it did not sound like them, though he softened on that by 2005. McCulloch joined Coldplay for it at T in the Park in 2003, Seal and Mikey Dread performed it in 50 First Dates (2004), the Smashing Pumpkins played it on their 2008 tour, and David Hasselhoff sang it with A Flock of Seagulls in 2019. The band previewed it on BBC television in September 1986, alongside The Game. Pitchfork's Joe Tangari called it a hook-heavy reverb bomb splattered over American college radio, and the Independent singled it out as a high point of the opening set at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008.
