Announcing the record in July 2015, the band called it their first self-produced album, a real studio record made in isolation by the five of them. Smith said music can be both pop and experimental, and that a darkness is what interests him in a song. It was recorded at Crear in Scotland's Western Highlands, engineered by Justin Lockey, mixed in London by Alan Moulder and mastered by Matt Colton. Rachel Goswell of Slowdive sang on Ocean of Night, The Law and Oh My World.
The singles were No Harm, Marching Orders and Life Is a Fear. Marching Orders was issued as 300 hand-stamped test pressings scattered through Oxfam shops in the UK, Germany and Belgium. In Dream reached number five in the UK and number one in the Netherlands and Flanders, and had a Metacritic score of 66. Gigwise placed it alongside Depeche Mode and Radiohead, Mojo gave it 8 out of 10, and Uncut was less convinced.
