Smith said the sessions that followed Urbanowicz's departure came after a long, hard couple of years in which the songs were never good enough. The new line-up aimed for something more direct. Smith pointed to R.E.M. and Arcade Fire, described the sound as having a foot in the alt rock and Americana world, and said the songs could be played on an acoustic guitar. The album was produced by Jacquire King and mixed by Craig Silvey, and the band also worked with Flood, who had produced In This Light and on This Evening. It was mostly recorded live at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. All songs are credited to Smith, Leetch, Lay, Lockey and Williams.

A Ton of Love, the first single, was first played on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show on 6 May 2013. Formaldehyde, Honesty and Sugar followed. The album reached number six in the UK and topped the charts in Flanders and the Netherlands, and earned an IMPALA double gold award for 150,000 sales in Europe. It divided critics, with a Metacritic score of 55 from 22 reviews.
