One of three Either/Or songs placed on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, it later turned up in the 2012 film Stuck in Love and in a season two episode of Rick and Morty. A cover by Chris Garneau was used in Pedro Almodovar's La piel que habito. Pitchfork has said it hides its desperate melancholy inside a lilting melody that never stops moving forward. Matt LeMay, reviewing the 2017 reissue, read it as a song about how protecting someone you love turns into a need to control them.
Elizabeth Newton's 2010 thesis at the University of Puget Sound, Between the Bars: The Early Musical Language of Elliott Smith, examines its style and influences. At a launch event for her SecretProjectRevolution film at the Gagosian Gallery in New York in September 2013, Madonna sang it after being dragged into the room by men dressed as prison guards.
