DreamWorks released it in 1998 as the first single from XO. It did not chart in the US and reached 52 in the UK. Slate called it Smith's best song. Pitchfork describes a karaoke bar where a man and a woman choose songs that thinly veil their quarrel: she sings Cathy's Clown and he answers with You're No Good.
Smith played it on Saturday Night Live on 17 October 1998 with John Moen, Jon Brion, Rob Schnapf and Sam Coomes. On a Dutch television special the same year he stopped partway through, saying there was no point in playing a song badly. Jayson Greene's 2023 Pitchfork review noted that live he sometimes sang I love you, mom in place of the closing XO mom. A plaque hung in Lincoln High School in July 2006 quotes the line about never knowing you now but loving you anyhow.
